Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Leadership & Patient Care:
- Provide direct psychiatric care to adult patients in the inpatient setting, including assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
- Lead and supervise a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, social workers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring high standards of patient care.
- Oversee the development and implementation of individualized treatment plans for adult patients, incorporating pharmacological interventions, therapy, and other evidence-based approaches.
- Conduct regular rounds and patient reviews to ensure care plans are updated, and patients are progressing toward their goals.
- Ensure best practices in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and other treatment modalities are used across the unit.
- Act as a clinical role model, providing mentorship and guidance to staff psychiatrists, medical students, residents, and other clinical personnel.
Administrative & Operational Leadership:
- Lead and oversee all aspects of the inpatient psychiatry department, working closely with hospital leadership to align clinical goals with organizational objectives.
- Develop and implement clinical policies and procedures, ensuring adherence to local, state, and federal regulations and accrediting body standards (e.g., The Joint Commission).
- Collaborate with senior leadership to plan and execute strategic initiatives to improve patient care, streamline operations, and enhance hospital performance.
- Monitor patient safety protocols and crisis management strategies, ensuring that all clinical staff are well-prepared for emergencies.
- Take a proactive role in ensuring the hospital meets quality and performance benchmarks for patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction.
Staff Development & Team Building:
- Supervise and mentor inpatient psychiatry staff, including providing ongoing education, training, and performance evaluations to ensure high levels of clinical competence.
- Foster a supportive and collaborative work environment by promoting open communication and teamwork among the clinical staff.
- Provide leadership in the recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing development of psychiatric and clinical staff, ensuring that they are equipped with the knowledge and resources needed to provide excellent care.
- Implement and support ongoing educational initiatives, including in-service training and continuing education programs for staff members.
Quality Improvement & Compliance:
- Lead continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives to improve clinical outcomes, patient safety, and the patient experience.
- Regularly evaluate clinical practices and implement evidence-based protocols and treatment guidelines to enhance care delivery.
- Ensure compliance with all hospital, state, and federal regulations, and provide guidance on documentation standards, accreditation processes, and ethical practices.
- Participate in clinical audits and performance evaluations to assess and improve the quality of care in the inpatient unit.
Community Engagement & Outreach:
- Serve as an advocate for the hospital and its services within the local healthcare community, building relationships with referring physicians, social service organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Contribute to public education and awareness campaigns to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues and promote mental health resources.
- Engage with community partners to enhance patient referrals and post-discharge services.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Education and Licensing:
- MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
- Board-certified or board-eligible in Adult Psychiatry.
- Active New Jersey medical license or eligibility for licensure in New Jersey.
- DEA certification and ability to prescribe medications.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in Adult Psychiatry, with significant experience in inpatient settings.
- At least 2 years of leadership or medical director experience in a psychiatric inpatient or hospital-based setting.
- Strong background in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including mood disorders, psychosis, substance use disorders, and trauma-related disorders.
- Proven experience in managing multidisciplinary teams, mentoring clinicians, and overseeing the operations of psychiatric departments or units.
Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent clinical judgment, with the ability to handle complex psychiatric cases and provide clear, evidence-based decision-making.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and lead a diverse clinical team.
- In-depth knowledge of inpatient psychiatric care, including treatment modalities, medications, and best practices.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with patients, families, staff, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure, and demonstrate a solutions-oriented approach to challenges.
- Experience with electronic health records (EHR) and clinical documentation systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Fellowship or additional specialized training in Adult Psychiatry or related subspecialties.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
- Experience with quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and performance management systems.
