Medical Nurse Practitioner (NP)

Overview

Position Summary:

The incumbent serves as an obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) Nurse Practitioner (NP) under the general administrative supervision of the Health Services Administrator and clinical supervision of the Medical Director. The incumbent, under the direction of a Medical Officer, provides care to those housed in the inpatient area and to other incarcerated offenders on an outpatient basis.

The NP in this role delivers primary health care to women from adolescence through childbearing to advanced age. This includes well-woman care (annual assessments including screening, evaluation, immunizations based on age and risk factors, as well as counsel on preventative care), prenatal management, family planning, fertility, and urogynecology, as well as care for episodic or chronic illnesses and sexually transmitted diseases.

Responsibilities:

Performs comprehensive physical and psycho social assessment including health maintenance screening and risk evaluation. Identifies behaviors and environmental factors affecting health/illness.

Performance Expectations:
  1. Secures a health and developmental history from the patient, records findings and makes critical evaluations.


  1. Requests appropriate diagnostic tests, i.e., laboratory, x-ray, visual acuity, and electrocardiograms, ultrasound, PAP smears, and interprets the results.


  1. Prescribes medications and treatment for illnesses.


  1. Performs gynecological exam.


  1. Assists in the management of chronic health problems.


  1. Evaluates total health care needs of patients and develops plans to meet these needs. Makes decisions concerning medical care needs of the patient with the physician as well as decisions regarding special needs.


  1. Teaches and demonstrates the application of good health practices to patients.


  1. Maintains and follows patient care protocols.


  1. Works with members of the healthcare team in educating the patients of their medical care.


  1. Serves in a teaching capacity in the training and development of other health care personnel.


  1. Continually updates clinical knowledge and skills through consultation, formal and informal education and review of literature for the benefit of themselves as well as for the healthcare team.


  1. All other duties as assigned.


Knowledge Required By the Position:

  • Comprehensive knowledge in the field of OB/GYN

  • Professional knowledge of health care principles, practices and procedures applied in providing services.

  • Knowledge in the techniques used to collect, organize, record and communicate in a meaningful way data relevant to primary health assessments, including a detailed medical history and physical examination.

  • Knowledge of and ability to treat chronic health problems, such as hypertension and diabetes.

  • Knowledge of a broad range of pharmaceutical for routine chronic illnesses and emergency drug therapy, and how to assist the physician in performing more exhaustive diagnosis and treatments.

  • Ability to interpret special screening and developmental tests of clinical laboratory procedures such as urinalysis, complete blood counts, staining and examination of smears for bacteria, and blood glucose.

  • Knowledge of mental health disorders and the ability to screen for gross mood changes, disoriented pattern behaviors or speech. Must have general knowledge to identify particular mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, and to provide emergency treatment and care.

  • Ability to provide preventive care and guidance in treating a variety of common illnesses, as well as guidance on nutrition.

  • Knowledge and ability to apply counseling and guidance skills and techniques in order to effectively influence the attitudes, behavior and work habits of inmates.

Qualifications

Qualifications: To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements. � Basic Requirements: Education: Must possess a Master�s Degree or higher level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program. Licensure: Must have current and Advanced Practice Nurse License or registered by the State of New Jersey in the clinical specialty required by the position. Must have prescriptive authority with current and valid DEA and CDS. All qualified successful candidates will undergo a credentialing process. This process includes validation of examinations, education, internship and residency. A current CPR/BLS card with demonstrated and cognitive skills is required. � EEO/MF/D/V
